House Rent Allowance (HRA) is a component of your salary that is tax exempt under Section 10 (13A) of the Indian Income-Tax Act, subject to certain rules. It offers numerous benefits to people living in rental properties.
If you live in a rented house and get HRA as part of your salary package, you can claim this exemption. However, you will need to provide rent receipts as proof of your rent payment.
HRA and Rent Receipt Planning:
1. Understanding your HRA: The amount of HRA that can be claimed for tax purposes can be minimum of:
- Actual HRA received
- 40% of salary (50%, if you are living in a metro city)
- Rent paid - 10% of salary
2. Pay Rent To Your Parents: If you are staying with your parents, you can pay them rent. This way, you can claim the HRA benefits, while your parents can include the rental income in their own accounts.
3. Rent Receipts: You must have rent receipts as they serve as a proof that you are paying rent. Keep all the signed receipts. They are required to verify the authenticity of your HRA claim.
4. Rent Agreement: The rent agreement is a must-have. If your rent is more than ₹1,00,000 annually, the PAN number of the landlord must be provided.
5. Co-working Space: If you are a freelancer or an entrepreneur working from a co-working space, you can claim the rent paid as a business expense, working from home doesn't mean you cannot claim HRA.
6. Keep a Record: Keep track of all your HRA components such as salary slips, rent receipts, rent agreements, PAN card of the landlord etc.
Proper HRA & Rent Receipt planning can help you avail maximum tax benefits and save money. Always consult with your chartered accountant or tax consultant for accurate planning.
